The Last Supper

When all were gathered in the room
Christ Jesus washed their feet.
“Now you’re all clean” the Master said
As He resumed His seat.

“You call me Teacher, also Lord”
He said, “and it is true,
I’ve set you an example,
Do what I have done for you”.

“I don’t refer to all of you’
The chosen ones I know,
For by one here, I’ll be betrayed”
The Master’s voice was low.

The twelve were sorely troubled
By these words from the Lord,
They didn’t realise that it was
Fulfilment of the Word.

“Who can it be” John asked the Lord
“It’s one of us” You said.
And Jesus softly said “T’is he
To whom I give this bread.”

And having spake, He took the bread
And dipped it in the fat,
Then turning, gave it to the one
Who on His left was sat.

Iscariot took the proffered sop
And Satan gripped him tight.
“Quickly Judas” said the Lord,
He went; and it was night.

We ask ourselves how could someone
Who’d seen Christ face to face,
And heard Him preach and seen Him heal
Fail to be saved by Grace.

Lord, we can also do good works
And think that’s heaven’s key,
Forgetting that salvation is
God’s gift, so rich and free.

It is only through the Spirit
And by Thy boundless Grace,
One day, we’ll enter heaven, and
Look on Thy lovely face.
